In three years, he increased circulation 400% and revenues by 1000%, and sold out to a newpaper chain for 50 times the purchase price.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSubsequently, Williams founded Venture Press, a home-based book publishing company. His publications included historical reprints, civic picture-histories, folklore and oral history.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe started and published many magazines, including \u003cem\u003eTar Heel: The Magazine of North Carolina\u003c\/em\u003e (a state-wide magazine), \u003cem\u003eThe New East\u003c\/em\u003e magazine, \u003cem\u003eNCEast Magazine\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eWashington Magazine\u003c\/em\u003e. He published association directories and chamber of commerce “quality of life” magazines, newcomer guides and tourism guides.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWilliams is a student of hard knocks.
